Product Development
Fashion product development is a central stage in professional clothing production and forms the foundation for the subsequent serial manufacturing of a collection. Initial design concepts are translated into physical prototypes, allowing fit, materials, construction techniques and design details to be tested, refined and optimized with precision. The final approved prototypes, together with detailed tech packs, serve as a clear, binding and verifiable production basis for our manufacturing partners in Portugal and Italy.
Through close collaboration with our clients, we ensure that every premium and luxury garment meets their exact functional, aesthetic and quality requirements. We manage and support the entire product development process — from the first concept to final production approval — with technical expertise, defined quality standards and transparent communication at every stage.
At Fashion Roof Services, collection development and the creation of high-quality prototypes are always based on a clearly defined brand vision and target audience, developed jointly with our clients. By precisely aligning design, materials and fit with the intended market positioning, we create the foundation for a distinctive USP, strong brand identity and a successful market entry in the premium and luxury fashion segment.
Collection Design
For the product development of your designs, we welcome our clients to a personal Fitting & Design Day at our Hamburg studio. During this session, the previously developed concept is brought to life and all details — from fit and design to materials, finishes and packaging — are precisely aligned with your planned collection.
Throughout the day, you are personally supported by our founder Stefan Eckert, who has worked with Alexander McQueen and has been running his own renowned luxury fashion label since 2009. This allows you to benefit from in-depth expertise within the international premium and luxury fashion industry, as well as direct creative and technical guidance.
This appointment forms the foundation for efficient prototyping and a successful subsequent textile production at our manufacturing facilities in Portugal and Italy.
Pattern Making
The creation of precise, custom patterns and fits is a core element of product development and essential to building a high-quality, distinctive fashion collection. For premium and luxury brands, pattern construction is not only the technical foundation of a garment, but also a key component of brand identity.
At Fashion Roof Services, we do not work with pre-constructed templates. Each pattern is developed entirely from scratch, based on our clients’ designs, specifications and individual brand aesthetics.
Our experienced studio team supports the complete product development process, ensuring that a creative concept is transformed into a technically refined, fit-optimized and production-ready pattern. This guarantees accurate and consistent reproduction during serial manufacturing at our production facilities in Portugal and Italy.
Tech Packs
Tech packs serve as the binding reference for prototype creation and contain all production-relevant details, including technical drawings, material specifications and defined construction methods. All content previously developed in close collaboration with our clients is clearly and systematically consolidated, ensuring that every stage of the product development process is fully transparent and traceable.
Throughout the course of a collection’s development, tech packs function as a structured record in which all updates, refinements and adjustments are continuously documented. This guarantees that both our client brands and our studio team work at all times from a reliable and consistent information base. Together with the approved prototype, the tech pack ultimately forms the decisive foundation for final production approval.
Fabric & Trim Development
Prior to the start of textile production at our manufacturing facilities in Portugal and Italy, all fabrics and trims are developed and produced individually. The definition of each component is based on high-quality sample materials, with our team supporting clients through expert guidance and material selection. This ensures that every detail is precisely aligned with the intended collection and brand positioning as part of the product development process.
Once all materials have been produced and delivered to our specialized manufacturing partners, we proceed with prototype creation. This structured and high-quality preparation ensures that the subsequent serial production meets the highest standards of the premium and luxury fashion segment.
Garment Prototyping
Garment prototyping is carried out at our specialized manufacturing facilities in Portugal and Italy, where the subsequent serial premium clothing production is also realized. Each prototype is produced exactly according to the final design defined during product development, incorporating the optimized fit as well as the custom-developed fabrics and trims approved in advance.
For the joint evaluation of the prototypes, we typically welcome our clients back to our Hamburg studio. During this session, we review in detail whether the prototype is fully production-ready or if further refinements are required. Through our transparent and collaborative approach, we ensure that all garments precisely reflect our clients’ vision before entering textile production.
Start of Clothing Production
Soon after final prototype approval as part of the product development process, clothing production begins at our manufacturing facilities in Portugal and Italy. For a detailed overview of our workflows, quality standards and production steps, we invite you to explore our Textile Production page, where we explain the complete process with Fashion Roof Services in depth.
Our European production locations enable precise manufacturing, short communication channels and the highest level of quality control. Through our specialized factories in Portugal and Italy, we ensure that each garment is produced exactly according to your specifications and meets the demanding standards of the premium and luxury fashion segment.
Product Development & Prototyping Costs
The costs of product development primarily depend on the scope and complexity of the collection — including the number of styles, the desired level of workmanship, material selection and the technical requirements of individual designs. Once the design phase is completed, during which we provide comprehensive consultation and propose suitable options for the collection, we are able to prepare a precise and transparent cost calculation.
An initial cost indication, however, can already be provided during a non-binding introductory call or Zoom meeting. In this early exchange, we explain typical cost structures, share examples from previous projects and offer realistic assessments for different types of collections within the premium and luxury segment, as well as for our production locations in Portugal and Italy.
Fashion Product Development FAQ
Can I develop prototypes first and decide later whether to proceed with production?
No. Collection development and the creation of high-quality prototypes are the most time-intensive and technically demanding stages of the entire product development and clothing production process—especially within our manufacturing facilities in Portugal and Italy. For professional manufacturers, this phase is only economically viable when commissioned in direct connection with the subsequent production of the collection.
What happens if the prototype is not yet perfect?
Prototyping is an integral part of product development and includes thorough preparation and refinement of each style. During this phase, designs, patterns, fit and materials can be adjusted and optimized across several iterations. Any additional costs related to these refinements are communicated transparently and in advance. This ensures that the final prototypes fully meet our clients’ expectations and quality standards, enabling efficient production in premium and luxury quality.
Are my designs, prototypes and technical documents treated confidentially?
Yes. At Fashion Roof Services, all product development information is handled with strict confidentiality. Your designs, prototypes and technical documentation are used exclusively for the purpose of your project and are not shared with third parties.
How long does prototype production take?
Prototype lead times depend primarily on the production time of all required components, the number of styles within the collection and their technical complexity. Once designs are defined and all fabrics and trims have been finalized, we provide a clear and reliable timeline for the prototype phase within the product development process.
Can we supply our own fabrics or trims?
No. Fashion Roof Services works exclusively with its own materials and with fabrics and trims produced by long-standing partner suppliers. As a manufacturer operating in the premium and luxury segment, maintaining consistently high quality standards is essential. For this reason, we only use components from suppliers whose production processes and quality levels we know and can guarantee—ensuring reliable results across our European manufacturing facilities.
How many prototypes are required before starting clothing production?
In most cases, a single prototype is sufficient. Minor adjustments are documented in a detailed adjustment file.
If more significant changes are required—particularly regarding fit—the development of a second prototype may be recommended. In such cases, we advise our clients individually to determine the most efficient and suitable solution within the product development process.
